Martin King Arthur, popularly known as Kofi Kinaata has granted his first interview after making history at the just-ended 22nd edition of the Vodafone Ghana Music Award (VGMA).

The four-time winner of the Songwriter of the Year award at the Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA), has responded to critics to prove his writing abilities.

In response to some industry players who claim that he is overrated and doesn’t deserve the kind of credit given to him, the history maker said that his recent award is a clear indication that he is a good songwriter.

The majority of Ghanaians decided that he is good and that is enough for him

Amongst those who criticized Kofi Kinaata is veteran musician, Rex Omar who excluded the ‘VGMA Awards Winner’ from his top five songwriters claiming that he was not that good a writer.

In an interview, Rex Omar granted him some months ago on the Accra-based Zylofon FM, the Senior industry player said that the ‘Things fall apart’ hitmaker can be described as a good lyricist but not a good songwriter.

During the interview, the host, Ibrahim Ben Baako, asked about his song writing skills of which he (Kinaata) said, “I believe in myself, I know myself so this is for you people so you can believe that Kofi can write songs or Kofi has good contents.

“For me I know who I am, I know I can write but this is just for you people to believe that I can write.”

Kofi Kinaata further went on to say that he he strongly believed he was going to win the award again because it was a done deal due to extra effort he puts in the songs he releases.

He added that the stress in promoting songs here in Ghana forces him to put together great pieces so his song can promote itself.

According to the writer, he targets the right audience and mediums when writing a song.

In the Entertainer’s own words— “Promotion in Ghana is very tough; a lot is involved, and so sometimes when I’m writing a song, I make sure I do stuff that wouldn’t be hard to promote, one that DJ’s would like to play and one that people call FM stations to request, so as to make the work easier,”

“Sometimes you have to follow trend or say certain things before a song can hit. If you can’t do all that you have to make sure you do a good song”

Kofi Kinaata won the Songwriter of the Year Award with his song ‘Behind The Scenes’, making his victory four times in a row and the first of its kind in Ghana’s music history.

Kinaata set a record during the 21st edition of the VGMA 2021, when he took the Songwriter of the Year Award three consecutively.

He broke his own record with his victory this year and that is enough reason for him to blow his own trumpet.
