Samia Suluhu Hassan has been sworn in as Tanzania’s president, becoming the country’s first female leader.
According to the BBC, Samia was sworn in at the statehouse in Dar es Salaam by Chief Justice Ibrahim Juma
On Wednesday, the Tanzanian government confirmed President John Magufuli’s death, two weeks after he vanished from public view, fueling rumors that he had contracted COVID-19.
Samia Hassan is Tanzania’s sixth president and Africa’s first female executive president.
She is also East Africa’s first female president. Hassan will complete the remaining five years of Magufuli’s mandate, which will conclude in 2025, according to the Tanzanian constitution.
